NMC General Information

About NMC?

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

Nurses and midwives trained outside the European Economic Area who are seeking UK registration must pass the NMC test of competence. This test consists of two parts and measures applicants against current pre-registration education standards. It assesses the essential professional knowledge, skills and attitudes required for safe and effective nursing or midwifery practice in the UK.

Part 1 – CBT [multiple choice examination]
Part 2 – OSCE [objective structured clinical examination]

The distinct nursing fields of practice are:
• Adult nursing
• Children’s nursing
• Learning disabilities nursing
• Mental health nursing

Domain 1: Professional values
Domain 2: Communication and interpersonal skills
Domain 3: Nursing practice and decision-making
Domain 4: Leadership, management and team working

How much is the fee?

There are different fees for different stages of the application process:
• Application for nursing/midwifery £140
• Part 1 test of competence (CBT) £130
• Part 2 test of competence (OSCE) £992
• Admission onto our register £153
• Total £1415

Eligibility?

In the UK, each field of nursing and midwifery is separate and distinct. Each requires three years of specialist pre-registration education and practice.
Practice requirements
Previously, overseas nurses and midwives wishing to apply to join our register must have worked for 12 months after achieving their qualification. We have now removed this requirement, meaning applicants can apply to join our register after qualifying.

Language Requirements?

Language Requirements – Accepted English language tests

International English Language Test System (IELTS)
If you have completed an IELTS Academic examination you must provide an IELTS certificate that confirms:
• at least 7.0 in the listening and reading sections
• at least 7.0 in the writing and speaking sections, and
• at least 7.0 overall.

Occupational English Test (OET)
If you have completed an OET examination you must provide a certificate that confirms:
• at least a B grade in listening and reading, and
• at least a B grade in writing and speaking.

Combining tests
You can achieve the required mark across two test sittings if:
• you sit the tests within six months of each other, and
• you are tested in all four skills at the same time, and
• if you take an IELTS test, all scores in both sittings are above 6.5 and you achieve 7.0 or higher in all four fields when the results of both sittings are viewed together, or
• if you take the OET, all grades in both sittings are above Grade C+ and you achieve Grade B or higher in all four fields when the results of both sittings are viewed together.

About NMC CBT Test?

Part 1 is a computer based test (CBT). The CBT is multiple choice and can be taken at a Pearson VUE test centre available in most countries around the world.
• 120 multiple-choice questions
• 4 Hours (no breaks)
• No negative marks

Format
• 50 questions will relate to generic nursing competencies found in each domain of nursing.
• 50 questions will be the application of generic nursing competencies to the specific field of nursing being applied for, for example, as applied to the adult, child, person with a learning disability or person with a mental health problem.
• 20 questions will focus solely on the specific competencies required for the field of nursing being applied for.
• There are 20 critical questions within the exam which focus on patient or public safety.

About OSCE Test?

Part 2 – The objective structured clinical examination (OSCE)

The second part of the test is the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). This will act out scenarios which nurses and midwives are likely to encounter when they assess, plan, carry out and evaluate care. Each separate clinical examination is known as a ‘station’ and candidates will visit all the stations within a set time.

The OSCE is made up of six stations, each lasting fifteen minutes.

Four stations will be scenario based and relate to:

1. Holistic patient centred assessment (Practical Station)
2. Planning (Written station)
3. Implementation (Practical)
4. Evaluation (Written Station) All of which are stages of nursing and midwifery care.

Two stations will be testing practical clinical skills. Make sure that you read the station instructions carefully. Do not be afraid to look at them again if you are unsure. You will not be penalised for this.
